Sprint's HTC One gets Android 4.3, other US carriers to follow this month

Owners of the unlocked HTC One have already received the update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but now it's time for the smartphone's US carrier variants to get the goods. HTC USA took to Twitter today to announce that the 4.3 rollout is starting for Sprint customers now, with AT&T and T-Mobile set to get the update later in mid-October and Verizon by the end of the month. The latest version of Jelly Bean, for those who need a refresher, brings improved low-light camera performance, a battery charging percentage indicator and the usual bug fixes. Apple will sell 6 to 6.5M iPhones this weekend as gadget lovers line up

iPhone 5C

Last year when the iPhone 5 launched, it sold five million units in its first weekend of sales. This weekend, Apple could sell as much as 30 percent more iPhone 5S and 5C models, according to one analyst.

“In aggregate, we believe Apple will sell a total of 6 million to 6.5 million of the two new iPhones this weekend,” Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White said today in a research note.

That’s due to the fact that Apple’s selling two models as opposed to one, of course, but also because, unlike other years, Apple has stopped selling the previous year’s model, the iPhone 5. Previously, Apple had always kept the immediately prior model on the shelf, diverting some sales away from the newest version.

The 5C could be the big seller — not just because it’s cheaper, but also because it was made available for pre-orders on September 13, so it has had a bit more sales runway. Oddly, the 5S was not available for pre-orders, and White notes that over two million iPhone 5 units were pre-ordered after Apple’s last big phone launch. Of course, the fact that the iPhone 5C is cheaper — and is available in multiple colors — likely won’t hurt its sales either.

However, that 6-6.5 million project might even be on the low side.

Delivery times for some of the key models, such as the 16GB charcoal model, are already up to 7-10 days as of 9AM this morning (PST), after being 1-3 days earlier today. And a former coworker told me that the lineups at the local Apple stores in Vancouver were “massive,” with people lined up since last night.

While the 5S might be in shorter supply, there should be plenty of 5C’s to go around:

“The iPhone 5C was available for pre-orders starting on September 13, and our research suggests the tech supply chain made ample supply available for the launch,” White said.

That’s all good news for Apple.

After months and even years of declining global market share versus Android, the combined iPhone 5S and 5C launch is Apple’s shot at reclaiming some of the mobile market leadership position it has surrendered to Google.

Heck, the people in the coffee shop where I’m writing this post are also talking about the new iPhone launch, and whether the 5S is worth upgrading to. Most, however, are not as crazy as these two 20-somethings who camped out at New York’s iconic Apple store for two weeks — and weren’t even first in line.

The HTC One, released earlier this year, is a dazzling smartphone in many respects. For some, however, it is perhaps a bit too big. That’s why HTC created the HTC One mini, a smaller version of its flagship phone with the smaller-handed public in mind. If you like premium phones, but need something more human-size than today's phablets, the One mini is well worth a look.




Body

The HTC One mini is small, but only when compared to the One, the Galaxy S4, the LG G2, and other modern flagship smartphones that blur the line between tablet and phone. It’s not as compact as an iPhone 5, for example, but it is smaller than its bigger brother. It carries over the same high-quality design and feel from the One and makes only a few compromises to gain the desired reduction in size.

The most obvious change to the design between the One and mini is where the metal and plastic materials meet. The One sandwiches plastic between two metallic platters; the mini's front and back surfaces are instead placed into a polycarbonate frame that wraps all the way around the outer edge of the smaller phone. The effect is that the mini has more obvious plastic pieces as part of the design (see comparison images below). I wish the plastic on the mini was matte instead of glossy. The glossy finish cheapens the look just a wee bit, in my opinion.
